Interested in Film or Filmmaking? Join the Orthodox Filmmakers Group!

I was about to start an Orthodox Filmmakers group on Facebook, when I realized there already is one. So…rather than start a new one, I’m promoting the one that I found.
If you are an Orthodox filmmaker…or even if you just like films and fancy yourself a patron of the arts, please check out the page, and become a fan!
One of the difficulties with being Orthodox in the West is that our communities tend to be small and dispersed. If it’s difficult to connect with other Orthodox, it’s even more difficult for those Orthodox artists in our midst to connect. The internet, of course, helps bridge this gap.
This is why I wanted to start an Orthodox filmmakers group. One of the chief goals of Protecting Veil, in fact, is to champion the cause of Orthodox artists, both ecclesiastical and otherwise. If you have any suggestions as to how to go about doing this, or if you know of an Orthodox artist that we should know about, please connect us!

Turkey Offers Citizenship to Orthodox Bishops

Turkey has made a remarkable policy change by offering citizenship to Orthodox bishops not born in Turkey. Among the many crises the Ecumenical Patriarchate faces, one of them is the decreasing number of Turkish-born candidates for the position of Patriarch. Turkey requires that the Ecumenical Patriarch be a Turkish citizen, which up until now more or less meant that he had to have been Turkish-born.

“Don’t be neglectful of prayer!”

“Don’t be neglectful of prayer! At table, in the morning, afternoon and evening. In particular don’t miss Small Compline for any reason, tired though you may be. It’s a question of self-sacrifice and, in particular, of love. When a beloved person calls you very late at night, how are you able to speak sometimes for a few hours, despite your fatigue, without being put out, but being, rather, pleased?”

- Elder Epiphanios (Theodoropoulos) of Athens (1930-1989)

Regina Spektor, “Laughing With”

I always liked Paste Magazine’s tagline, “Signs of life in Music, Film, and Culture.” I don’t know that anyone at Paste thinks in particularly theological ways, so I’ve been tempted to co-opt the tagline for Protecting Veil. (“Life” for an Orthodox Christian has obviously more nuanced meaning than for most people.)

In any case, always on the lookout for signs of life, and for (what seem to be) sparks of real inspiration, I was wholly pleased to discover Regina Spektor’s song, “Laughing With,” on her latest album, “Far.” That other songs on the album have theological themes (“Blue Lips,” among others) suggests that the album may well merit a proper review. For now, however, I just wanted to provide the lyrics to “Laughing With.”

Particularly noteworthy (of course) is Spektor’s criticism of caricatures of god, and of straw man arguments that could only satisfy the true believer (the atheist, that is). Also worth noting, for anyone wanting to deal with religious subjects in art, is that Spektor seems particularly effective by, rather than overtly attacking, simply holding up a mirror to culture.
(Oh…and the music is excellent, too.)

“Laughing With”

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God when they’re starving or freezing or so very poor

No one laughs at God when the doctor calls after some routine tests
No one’s laughing at God when it’s gotten real late and their kid’s not back from that party yet

No one laughs at God when their airplane starts to uncontrollably shake
No one’s laughing at God when they see the one they love hand in hand with someone else and they hope that they’re mistaken
No one laughs at God when the cops knock on their door and they say, “We’ve got some bad new, sir”
No one’s laughing at God when there’s a famine, fire or flood

But God can be funny
At a cocktail party while listening to a good God-themed joke or
Or when the crazies say he hates us and they get so red in the head you think that they’re about to choke

God can be funny
When told he’ll give you money if you just pray the right way
And when presented like a genie
Who does magic like Houdini
Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket and Santa Claus

God can be so hilarious
Ha ha
Ha ha

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God when they’ve lost all they got and they don’t know what for

No one laughs at God on the day they realize that the last sight they’ll ever see is a pair of hateful eyes
No one’s laughing at God when they’re saying their goodbyes

But God can be funny
At a cocktail party while listening to a good God-themed joke or
Or when the crazies say he hates us and they get so red in the head you think that they’re about to choke

God can be funny
When told he’ll give you money if you just pray the right way
And when presented like a genie
Who does magic like Houdini
Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket and Santa Claus

New Orthodox Liberal Arts College

We recently learned about the establishment of St. Katherine’s Orthodox liberal arts college in San Diego. Please re-post this information and try to get the word out…it would be tragic if, after all the investment of time and other resources, they did not end up with sufficient numbers of students!

“Speak more to God about your children than to your children about God…”

“Speak more to God about your children than to your children about God…. The soul of the teenager is in a state of an explosion of freedom. For this reason he has a hard time accepting various counsels. So, rather than counseling him continuously and reproaching him now and again, leave the situation to Christ, to the Panaghia and to the Saints, asking them to bring him to reason.”

- Elder Epiphanios (Theodoropoulos) of Athens (1930-1989)

Assembly of Orthodox Hierarchs in North and Central America

I don’t generally make posts of a “political” (national or ecclesiastical) nature, but I’ve been hearing a good deal about the assembly taking place this week in NYC and felt it was worthy of note. Regardless of one’s position vis à vis the meaning and proper form of Orthodox unity in the diaspora, it seems worthwhile noting this assembly and encouraging prayer for wisdom, direction, and unity.

From the official press release:

More than 50 hierarchs will take part in the first Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in North and Central America, to be convened by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America in New York City, May 26-28…In discussing the Assembly at the May 7 meeting of the Archdiocesan Council in Atlanta, Archbishop Demetrios explained that the nature of the assembly is as “a temporary, not a permanent institution. It is simply preparatory to facilitate the process of an ecumenical council (in the future) that will decide the final form of the existence of the Church in a particular country.” His Eminence further explained that the assembly is to meet annually and is not a continuation of SCOBA. Rather, it works to “prepare a plan for dealing with anomalies, such as more than one bishop in a given locale and other things that interfere with the life of the Church.” It is also designed “to project a unified witness of the faith.” As such, the Archbishop called the work of the Assembly “tremendously important. The function and outcome of this first meeting will determine how it continues in the future.”
